BIOGRAPHY

Many people today believe that the traditional center of the violinmaking world has shifted from Cremona, Italy to America. From shore to shore, dedicated craftsmen are working hard to advance this delicate and highly functional art form. It is refreshing to see young men and women discovering the joy of working with their hands.

At a very young age, I was drawn to the graceful lines, and alluring sound of stringed instruments. Master Craftsmen such as Amati, Guarneri, Stradivari, and others created instruments that allowed composers and  musicians to expand their creative boundaries, and take music to a higher level of technical excellence. It was not long before I discovered I had the God given talent to  immerse myself in this challenging work.

My career began in restoration and repair, and progressed to accepting the challenges of carving my own instruments. I owe a great debt of gratitude to my mentors, both here and abroad, and to a long list of others who encouraged me along the way. The longer I worked at refining my skills, the more apparent it became that the quest for technical excellence is never ending.  To be successful, you have to be willing to re-examine every  element of the craft each time you sit down at the work bench.

Throughout the site you will see examples of recently completed instruments. The photos show refined Italian styling, and compliance to tried and true techniques established centuries ago.

Gammuto violins are considered to be works of art by many, but my main focus is on the refinement of tone quality.
