VIOLIN, VIOLA, AND CELLO

Looks are not often deceiving when it comes to the selection of professional grade instruments.  Using the best aged tonewoods available, employing traditional construction, finishing techniques, and setting an instrument up properly are the keys to achieving superior tone quality.

INSTRUMENT SELECTION

We live in a time when value has become clouded by marketing strategies, and new product hype. For example,  what is a tube of tooth paste really worth? Is it $0.59 or $8.59? Many people purhase this product by sale price, taste, color, the look of the packaging, and overlook the effectiveness of the product. This misguided approach is applied to many products we purchase.

Violins today sell from $100 to $3.5 million. Is there any wonder that people are confused, or reticent? The most important consideration should be sound quality, tempered by budgetary constraints. Musicians value sound quality. Investors are primarily concerned with the name on the label, and resale value.

Professional musicians know what to look and listen for when selecting an instrument. Judging sound quality is subjective, but accomplished players recognize quality when they hear it.  They also acknowledge that contemporary makers have taken full advantage of discovery relative to the physical attributes and science assigned to the instruments of centuries past. The artform has been enhanced by devotion to the craft, and serious study.

STRENGTH  OF MATERIALS

Gammuto stringed instruments are made from the very finest, naturally seasoned  alpine elevation tonewoods. The timbers used are selected for proper aging, optimum density,  flexibility, and potential tone quality. The sound plates are graduated to perfection, and resonate like cathedral bells when completed. The tinted oil varnish top coats are applied over a natural ground, and accent the natural beauty of the wood. Polished and low luster finishes are both available.

BOW SELECTION

Fifty percent (50%) of a stringed instrument's sound is generated by the bow. Yes, you read that correctly, 50%. Professional players know this to be true. Some Bowmakers will advise you to buy the bow first, and then the instrument.  I do not agree with this line of thought for several reasons. It is far more difficult to find a superior violin than it is to find a high quality bow. My thoughts on factory versus custom-made instruments apply equally to bow selection. You should buy from a bowmaker. He can provide you with a bow that will compliment your instrument, and meet your personal preferences relative to weight, balance, etc.

Gammuto stringed instruments posses the qualities discriminating players find desirable for Soloist, Orchestral, and Ensemble work. Instruments can also be setup for all traditional folk playing styles.

Viola and Cellos are built as time permits.  High-grade, fractional sized student instruments are built on special order only.  Call for details and lead time required.
